The present book is a valuable work which provides students of Islamic studies and translation with a considerable source of vocabulary. Although there are some other books in the field, the present book is marked by being of a general nature and comes handy to students of different subjects in general and Islamic studies in particular. The major objective of this book is to present an inventory of technical terms used in Islamic studies and translation of Islamic texts. The author to an acceptable degree is successful in offering assistance to students, especially in theology and philosophy, in finding the meaning and equivalents of certain technical terms, and also to the general reader interested in Islamic subjects in reading books and articles. Although the book is far from being comprehensive-surely no Glossary of convenient size could hold all the terms-it includes most of the necessary terms which are usually found in more specialized glossaries and companions to Islamic studies. Indeed, one of the points which distinguish this Glossary from other similar books written in this field is that it is not confined to one specialized knowledge but it covers so many areas in Islamic studies and it includes the current terms used in the related disciplines. The sources from which the English equivalents have been derived are for the most part books and translations done by scholars in the field and the compiler has attempted to include those equivalents which are the closest to Islamic terms and phrases as they are used in Arabic and Persian. The Glossary, therefore, could be of much help to students of various disciplines, such as theology, philosophy, exegesis and hadith, and this makes the present book a useful addition in the field of Islamic studies and translation.
